October 2014

October 3-4 – Vanessa Hollingshead

From TOUGH CROWD, COMEDY CENTRAL PRESENTS, NBC
Also Featuring Sean Morton & Matt Jenkins
Vanessa is the quintessential native New Yorker. She only just got her drivers license a couple you years ago. She spent a year at Millbrook Mansion with her father who introduced Timothy Leary, and later, Paul McCartney of the Beatles to LSD. After an accidental “trip” of her own at 5 years old, she returned to the care of her mother who was trying to juggle the full time career of finding good grass in bad neighborhoods with her responsibilities as a mom. Throw in two years on a commune by herself, two years in London with her dad, a decade of temp work and her angst was complete. Coincidentally, a comedian was born.Vanessa just did The World Comedy Tour in Australia in 2005 as well as, Comedy Central Presents which first aired February 2005. She was recently featured on Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, Dateline, and Oxygen as well as doing the Montreal “Just for Laughs” tour with Kevin Pollack. She has done The Montreal Comedy Festival 5 Times in total, as well as appearing on the original pilot of the AJ Benza Show on “E”. She’s a favorite of Comedy Central and did “Canned Ham”, where she did a spoof parody of the movie, “Nurse Betty” as well as an appearance on “New Joke City”. She was the guest host on NBC’s “Later” as well as the critically acclaimed film “Ghost Dog”, directed by Jim Jarmusch. She also taped two TV Shows, at Jonglar’s in London, and well as a TV Show in Rotterdam, Netherlands. She has performed on the “The Jim Bruer Show”, Comedy Central’s Premium Blend and NBC’s “Louie Anderson Comedy Showcase.” In 1999 Vanessa was invited to perform her one woman show “Flashback” at the Aspen US Comedy Arts Festival. She was then offered the opportunity to do “Flashback” at the HBO workspace in LA and at Gary Marshall’s Falcon Theatre. She has completed her first screen play, which is now in development. Vanessa toured approximately 30 military bases in the Middle East for a month. She’s a national headliner, can be seen all over the United States as well as Europe. But, she can always be seen a little closer to home at the Comic Strip, Stand Up New York, Caroline’s, The Boston Comedy Club, Gotham Comedy Club, The Improv, The Laugh Factory, and the Comedy Cellar in New York City.

October 10-11 – Howard G

From HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, BET’s Comicview, Showtime At The Apollo
Also Featuring Geno Talarico & Tommy Gooch

Allow me just to give you some of the things I have accomplished. I have appeared twice on the television show “Showtime At The Apollo”… once as a amateur… two years later as a professional. Russell Simmons’s HBO Def Comedy Jam came next… Steve Harvey was the host. Then BET’s Comicview…I have appeared on three seasons (2000 to 2003). I have opened up for Martin Lawrence, Jamie Fox, Kevin Pollock, Dave Chappell, Tommy Davidson, Yolanda Adams, The Isley Brothers, The Temptations, and Patti Labelle to just name a few.

In the summer of 2002, I had the honor to go overseas to Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan to perform for our U.S troops. Trust me…it was the most gratifying experience I have ever felt in my comedy career. Just to know I made a difference in those soldiers lives…makes me feel wonderful.

October 24-25 – Mike Stankiewicz

From Atlantic City, Las Vegas
Also featuring Mike Grady & Mike Warsaw

Dig, it’s appropriate that this cat has gigged in nearly every comedy venue in the United States. At home in an eclectic gathering in San Francisco or a rust belt bar come shifts end, this clever comic will turn the tables on everyone. Winner of the prestigious”Best of Philly” award presented by Philadelphia Magazine, Stank takes you down a road you didn’t expect to travel with a conversational style that makes you feel like you’re riding the bar stool next to him. Among his international television appearances including “Comedy On The Road” with John Byner on A&E, Mike presents a special wit that transcends all mediums and blows his audiences away! Maybe that’s why everyone wants him back.
Originally from Erie, PA where Mike realized playing second base on the Duck Inn softball team would not propel him to the “Big League”. He moved to Philadelphia to cut his teeth doing stand-up. With his rust belt influence, his intellectual proclivity and a blue-collar approach to humor, he turned Philadelphia on its ear. Stank does for stand-up what Tom Waits does for music. So if you like Mr. Waits and have a penchant for Charles Bukowski, you’ll love Mike Stankiewicz! An interesting aspect to Mike’s career is that he has lived on both coasts (LA and NY) and fits seamlessly in both locations as well as everywhere in between. Now Stank plies his wares everywhere from Las Vegas to Atlantic City, from Mobile to Montana. He’s a modern day Kerouac, hell, you probably passed him “on the road”!

October 31 – Johnny Watson

From Good Morning America, SNL
Also Featuring Chip Ambrogio & Kevin Dombrowski

Johnny Watson A lot of comedians exaggerate about themselves when telling jokes. When Johnny Watson tells a joke about himself, his family, and his upbringing, no exaggeration is necessary. Watson, a white kid living in a series of black and Hispanic neighborhoods while growing up in New Jersey with two brothers and two sisters, couldn’t fight, so he told jokes to survive. And he’s still telling jokes to his legions of fans throughout the United States. And most of those (real) bits are about his family – “my father was a heroin addict and all my mother did was watch TV and smoke cigarettes”; or his upbringing in poor neighborhoods – “I was the poor kid on free lunch who always got my balls busted so since I couldn’t really fight, I had to be funny.” So funny that he was voted funniest and best story teller in grammar school and in high school. Turned out the “high school honor” was his only honor. Johnny graduated LAST in his class. His grandmother implored him to become a comedian because “you can’t do anything else right.” Watson started drinking when he was five years old and kept on going until high school. “I was burned out from drinking by the time I got to high school, so I became the designated driver before they had designated drivers,” he says. After briefly attending college in California, Johnny joined the Navy. Once he got out, he turned to comedy as a full-time profession. Watson has appeared throughout the United States at many of the biggest clubs, including The Laugh Factory in New York City and The Comedy Store in Los Angeles. He has also been in a host of TV, film and theater productions and does corporate engagements as well. When he is not on stage, Watson plays whiffle ball, cribbage and does other “exciting things.”
